January 7-16, 1945 Battle of Herrlisheim

NOTE: After Russell's  January 6 account of cozy fireside chats with the French mayor of the village of Mulcey, the 56th Armored Infantry Battalion was ordered to attack the town of Herrlisheim on January 8. Ten days of intense fighting ensued; this was the final German offensive west of the Rhine River and part of Operation Nordwind. US forces suffered 1,700 casualties in the course of the battle.

A detailed account of the complicated sequence of events at Herrlisheim is provided by Nathan Prefer here. Wallace Russell was wounded by a mortar fragment about 2 a.m. on the night of January 16 and was hospitalised for one month.
